The weight loss struggle is real but, what many people don’t realize is they are going about it all wrong. It is not about calories in equaling calories out. It is about consuming the RIGHT calories and the right foods for your unique body.
If you are consuming a small bag of potato chips that are about 100 calories, you may get about a handful of chips but you are also getting a spike in your blood sugar from the potatoes and a dose of toxins from the low quality oil that they are fried in. These things lead to inflammation in the body which results in fat being stored.
Inflammation causes weight gain!
For the same 100 calories, you can consume an apple and a big bowl of vegetables and not feel hungry, both because you are getting more food but also because you are consuming vitamins and nutrients that your body desires. Many people understand this concept either instinctively or intellectually.
However, even if you are eating all whole foods, these foods may still be contributing to weight gain or a struggle to lose the weight.
One woman I worked with reported to me that she suffered from gout, a build-up of uric acid in the toe joints that is extremely painful. I coached her through a food elimination diet, including healthy things such as the tomatoes, including the organic, home-grown ones that her father grew in his backyard. After not eating tomatoes for 2 weeks, her gout went completely away but, she really enjoyed her Dad’s tomatoes. She decided to test them and had one for lunch – nothing else; just one of Dad’s tomatoes. The gout came back WITHIN HOURS!
What this woman experienced is something called a food sensitivity and is caused by a leaky gut. In a leaky gut, our intestines no longer have tight junctions between the cells that keep larger particles of food from being introduced to our immune system. The immune system then thinks these particles are a danger to the body and produces chemicals to get rid of them. These chemicals can cause inflammation such as arthritis (inflammation in the joints), eczema, headaches, problems sleeping, bloating, constipation/diarrhea, or even irritable bowel syndrome or disease.
According to Dr. Mark Hyman, “If you don’t address inflammation by eliminating hidden food allergens or sensitivities and by eating an anti-inflammatory diet, you will never succeed at effective and permanent weight loss.”
When you stop eating foods that are not right for your body, you may feel sluggish, fatigues, and bloated. However, this is reversible. One of the first ways to reverse these feelings is to avoid the foods that are causing them. You will be surprised to learn that you do not need sugar and coffee to help you get through the day.
