What is a Salt Room?

Dry salt therapy is good for a myriad of conditions. It is excellent for people who have chronic lung conditions such as allergies, asthma, COPD, and emphysema. Because it is nature’s antibiotic, antiviral and antifungal, it is also good if you are feeling like you might be getting sick or trying to recover from something such as a cold or bronchitis. It is also excellent for relieving symptoms of psoriasis, eczema, acne and other skin conditions. People who suffer from anxiety and depression feel calmer and less anxious after sitting in a salt room. I like to joke that it can help with anything except weight-loss – and I can even make a scientific argument for that depending on what is preventing you from losing weight.

But not any room is a salt room…

What makes a salt room a salt room is a machine called a halogenerator. This machine takes pure pharmaceutical salt and grinds it up to about the size of your red blood cells. This salt enters the body through the lungs. The salt thins mucus secretions, is detoxifying since it pulls the toxins out of the cells, is anti-inflammatory meaning it helps reduce aches and pains and calms the immune system, and is anti-microbial.

The anti-inflammatory properties help people who have skin conditions. If you suffer from psoriasis, do you find that the beach helps calm your angry skin? That is the anti-inflammatory properties of the salt that is in the ocean water. You can get the same effect while sitting in the privacy of a salt room. The dry salt therapy, also known as halotherapy, can also ease the symptoms of eczema and acne and has helped with ulcerations on the skin.

A salt room can be decorated in a number of ways. I know of one salt room that is decorated like grandmother’s parlor with salt lamps scattered around to aid in filtering the dust and pollens out of the air. Other salt rooms may be decorated like caves and have salt on the floor. Whatever you prefer, you can find a salt room or salt cave that caters to your specific tastes.

The salt room at Just Breathe is decorated with a beautiful Himalayan salt wall. When I was working with the salt wall artist, I described to them how my favorite time of day was hiking in the woods as the sun was just starting to shine through the leaves of the trees. They took that to heart and created my wall using Himalayan salt which is made from the same salt as your Himalayan salt lamps should be made from. (To know if you have real Himalayan salt lamps, read my ebook, “5 Ways to Know Your Himalayan Salt Lamp is Real.”) My wall is framed with natural edge wood which looks like big trees in the forest.

Himalayan salt comes from an ancient sea which dehydrated and was covered up by the Himalayan Mountains. Since this is actually sea water, it emits negative ions just like a waterfall, rainy day or… being in the woods. These negative ions have been demonstrated to change our biochemistry so that we feel calmer, less anxious and less stressed. All great reasons to sit in a salt room.
