September is asthma epidemic month

September is also known as the Asthma Epidemic Month.

Why?

Researchers have shown that there is a rise in emergency room visits, hospital admissions, and unscheduled physician visits during September. This is typically related to the return to school. Viral infections, specifically those related to Rhinovirus, has been shown to be associated with about 80% of asthmatic cases, especially amongst school-aged children

Rhinovirus infections are most common in the early fall and are believed to be increased due to closer contact of children to others on school buses and in enclosed classrooms.

Scientists believe that the rise in asthmatic episodes happen for several reasons:

  – Children are re-exposed to viruses after many weeks of not being exposed to these viruses.

  – Late summer is a time when environmental allergens are high and there are also many allergens in the school setting. Allergens are a known factor contributing to asthma.

  – Returning to school may be stressful for many children and stress is also a trigger for asthma.

All of these things combined, lead to an increase in asthmatic episodes.

It will be interesting to see if the research will show a decrease in emergency room visits, hospital admissions, and unscheduled physician visits with so many children receiving education from their homes during this time of COVID-19.

Salt therapy helps to control symptoms of asthma and allergies as well as increasing the immune system.

The salt released into the air when experiencing halotherapy, or salt therapy, is breathed deep into the lungs.

This salt absorbs the moisture that is present in the respiratory tract which helps thin the mucus secretions

When this occurs, it makes it easier to dispel any allergens such as dust and pollen, pathogens, or other irrititants that may be present in the respiratory system. In addition, the salt strengthens the immune system allowing the body to better manage any viruses or pathogens that do make it into the body.

This is all done in a non-pharmaceutical, holistic manner by just enjoying some relaxing time in the beautiful salt room.
