Thai Massage now at Just breathe

One of the best parts of owning a wellness center is learning about all sorts of alternative therapies and having an opportunity to try them out so that I can share the experience with my community.

Marline is one of the newest practitioners and will be working at Just Breathe on Saturdays offering a wonderful blend of Swedish, Deep Tissue, Myofascial Release, and Thai Massage. Not knowing what Thai Massage is, I asked and was told it was “lazy man’s yoga.” Being curious, I signed up for a session.

Thai Massage is done on a mat on the floor. You are fully clothed so it is perfect for those who do not like to get undressed  or covered in oils. Marline started by rubbing and stretching my feet and, as I told her, anytime anyone wants to rub my feet, it is a good day.

She then pressed on my legs and proceeded to move my body into positions that I am familiar with from my yoga classes. She put me in a tree pose and stretched and opened my hips. Later in the massage, I was laying on my stomach and she gently pulled me into a very delicious back bend. It was far enough that I could feel my body stretch but never did she do anything that caused me discomfort or pain.

Something that surprised me was that she didn’t use just her hands but incorporated various parts of her body in stretching and manipulating my body including her elbows, knees, and even her feet. I felt relaxed and mellow after the massage but I think Marline got a good workout in.

Thai massage is great for reducing muscle soreness, increasing the range of motion and flexibility, improving circulation and lymphatic flow, improving posture, and reducing emotional stress and tension.

Marline is a Licensed Massage Therapist and a graduate of the Bancroft School of Massage in Worcester. She is also the mother to two young boys and recognizes how difficult it is for mother’s to find time for self-care. It is her vision to support and encourage women to not only make time for self-care but also to help them pay close attention to what their bodies are telling them which is why Marline is a perfect fit at Just Breathe.

Marline will also be offering Thai Reflexology in the Salt Room with Francesca at special events coming up soon including a special date night with or without your Honey on February 16th at 4 pm.

thankful for 2018 and looking forward to 2019

As we say good-bye to 2018, I want to take a moment to reflect and thank the beautiful, growing community at Just Breathe. This past year was our first full year and people have quickly come to realize that Just Breathe is the place to come to escape the outside world and leave their troubles behind.

As more people have experienced salt therapy or halotherapy, one of the main offerings at Just Breathe, the word is getting out. This practice is centuries old but relatively new in the United States and people are quickly learning that if they have almost any kind of ailment, are feeling a little under the weather, or are experiencing a lingering cough from an illness, Just Breathe can help prevent you from getting sick or relieve the symptoms just about anything that ails you.  As my friend who is a nurse practitioner says, “It’s just salt but it is good for anything!” Think about how much better you feel after going to the beach but without the mess.

Using dry salt therapy, many of our clients no longer need allergy medications, have combatted Seasonal Affective Disorder, are using it as a complementary therapy to dealing with anxiety and depression, have returned to work after being on workman’s comp for COPD, have prevented themselves from getting the flu after sitting next to “patient ‘0’” at work, have found relief from skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema and have just found a place to rest and relax and disconnect from the outside world.

We have much to be grateful for in other ways too.

  •  Our meditation program, run by our very talented Certified Energy Healer, Francesca, has grown from a couple of people at lunchtime on Wednesdays to a frequently packed room on Wednesday and Thursdays at noon with a growing group on Thursday evenings at 6:30 pm.
  • We have added Hypno-Reiki into our mix with Deb who is a Registered Nurse and Certified Hypnotist who provides her calming energy to help those with anxiety and other concerns in private sessions.
  • Lexy, Certified Acupuncturist, has joined our team by providing community style acupuncture with salt therapy twice a month. People have found relief from fibromyalgia, plantar fasciitis, and general aches and pains by combining the two therapies.
  •  Mimi is a yoga instructor with over 11 years of experience, and is also a Certified Energy Worker, has created a new program at Just Breathe, the Empowerment Series for Women. We had 5 women in the first program who have bonded to create new friendships, found stability and happiness in their lives, and the support they need to make major changes from altering their marital situation, redefining their jobs, or finding the support they need to create lives that they desire for themselves. This has proven to be a very powerful program.
  • I am a Certified Functional Medicine Health Coach, and have run 3 successful cleanses this past year. I also work with clients on a one-to-one basis for more complicated cases such as SIBO, hormonal imbalances such as PCOS and estrogen dominance, and Type II diabetes.
  • My first employee joined the team this year as well. I was fortunate to have my dear friend, Ed, Law of Attraction Expert and Life Coach, available to fill in for me one day a week and it actually warms my heart when I hear clients say how much they love him and can’t wait to see his smiling face behind the desk.

From sold out sound healings, to Law of Attraction workshops, to celebrating the Full Moon, Enchanted Circles, Candlelit Yoga and more, Just Breathe has quickly grown from “just” a salt room to an thriving community of like-minded people and, for this, my team and I are truly grateful.

But we are just starting!  We have lots of exciting new additions for you in 2019:

  • The Empowerment Series for Women will be back with the first 8-week session beginning  January 8th.
  • No one is perfect. It is coming up to that time of year when it is time to drop the sugar habit that tends to sneak in in December. We will be starting the next cleanse to clean up our diet and improve our health with a live meeting on January 16th at 7 pm. As always, previous program members are invited to join at a steeply discounted rate.
  • We have added massage to our growing services with Marline while Linda continues to offer massage and Trager®. We have also added a Heart-Centered Color Therapist, Emiko, and another Energy Healer, Sylvia.
  • Our fun and educational workshops will continue with Ed channeling “What Your Soul Wants You to Know,” a special Healing Circle with Shaman Sue Angelo, Lisa Campion joining us to deal with the “Energy Vampires,” and more! And don’t forget to check out a Sound Healing with Priscilla or Jean.

A Tip to Survive the Holidays

Does getting invited to a holiday party put you into a cold sweat after all the hard work you have done to lose weight?

It doesn’t have to be that way!

The big focus of any party or gathering is getting to spend time with friends or families but there is no reason why you can’t enjoy the food. Take the time to scan the offerings and decide what you truly want to enjoy. Maybe it’s Grandma’s apple pie or a piece of your friend’s fudge. Whatever it may be, remember the “Three Bite Rule.”

Why 3 bites?

The first bite is going to be as enjoyable as you think it is going to be.

The second bite is still wonderful but not as wonderful as the first bite.

By the third bite, you have enjoyed the food as much as you are going to.

It is time to set it aside and hit the dance floor or visit with a friend.

Don’t be afraid of this time of year! Get out and enjoy yourself and please share with the community how you enjoy the holidays.

Just Breathe is much more than a salt room. It is a community. A community of people who want to be and stay healthy and understand that doing so involves so much more than visiting the doctor for a yearly check-up. The people in this community do not define themselves by their symptoms and while some do identify with a diagnosis, many chose not to. At the end of the day, a diagnosis is just a group of symptoms that have a label put on them and symptoms are your body’s way of communicating to you that there is something wrong.

Stomach Acid – Is it time to rethink this common myth?

In a previous blog, I share with you that GERD, bloating, and general gastro-intestinal discomfort is frequently treated by suppressing stomach acid production using either prescribed or over-the-counter medication for example  protein-pump inhibitors such as Nexium® or Prilosec®, H2 receptor blockers such as Zantac® or Pepcid®, or even pain-killers such as aspirin or ibuprofen. The theory being that there is too much stomach acid which results in the acid backing up and forcing itself into the upper stomach and into the esophagus.

The fact is that as we age, our bodies produce less stomach acid, not more and, in reality, the stomach acid is entering the esophagus because it is taking the body longer to empty the stomach due to the decreased stomach acid.  Because of this, the mix of food and digestive juices, known as chyme, starts to ferment which causes gases to build up and there is pressure put on the lower esophageal sphincter which is then forced open, allowing what little stomach acid there is to enter the esophagus and cause that uncomfortable burning sensation.

Are you making this common mistake regarding GERD?

Many people suffer from GERD also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease. This is often accurately described as stomach acid in the wrong place. The piece that many people get wrong is that they believe this is caused by too much stomach acid. In fact, it is almost always caused by too little stomach acid.

GERD is most commonly the result of a dysfunction in the lower esophageal sphincter. When this sphincter weakens, what little stomach acid is present backs up into the esophagus. The mucosal lining of the esophagus is not coated in the same way that the stomach is, so the stomach acid causes irritation to the esophagus that results in a burning sensation. If this occurs over a prolonged period of time, the pepsin in the stomach acid, which is a protein digesting enzyme, actually starts to digest the tissue in the esophagus. This causes inflammation that eventually, if left untreated, can lead to cancer.

So, what weakens the lower esophageal sphincter?

Life, Health, and Essential Oils

More than 32 million children missed school last year due to illness or injury.

Are we really better because of “modern” medicine or is it time to go back to our roots and treat things naturally?

We can manage our health in one of two ways:

  • We can educate ourselves on self-care and be proactive in our medical needs.
  • We can practice lifestyle choices that help us maintain our health including:
    • Reducing our toxic load.
    • Resting and managing our stress.
    • Exercising
    • Focusing on fruits and vegetables in our diets and eliminating gluten, dairy, sugar and processed foods.

Essential oils are a gift from nature that allow us to focus on improving our health and wellness. They are a powerful tool that actually work from the cellular level and they are so easy to use! There are 3 options:

  • You can use essential oils aromatically by putting them in a diffuser.
  • You can use the topically by putting the directly on your skin or diluting them with a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil.
  • You can ingest them. (However, only ingest essential oils if they are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade. If it does not say “CPTG” on the label, do NOT ingest them!)

As we go back to school and work, there are lots of combinations of essential oils that we can use to help us stay healthy, focused and balance our moods. Some of my favorite blends to diffuse are:

  • OnGuard to attack the germs in my home or office.
  • Rosemary and peppermint to help me focus and remember. (Plus I LOVE the way it smells!)
  • Wild Orange and Frankincense to reduce stress.
  • Balance and Serenity to help me sleep like a baby!

I also travel with no less than 10 blends of oils in my bag at all time. My old co-workers had a field day with this but there wasn’t a day that somebody wasn’t asking me for something to help with their headache, their inability to focus, their stress level, etc. etc. etc.

YES! There’s an oil for that was a common mantra.
