It’s officially flu season. Did you know that regular salt therapy can help you avoid the flu?
Two years ago, a gentleman come into the salt room swearing that his desk at work was next to “patient 0.” He was bound and determined not to get the flu and salted about once a week for 3 months. He did not get sick and returns every flu season to avoid having to “pay those nasty doctor bills.”
The flu can affect people of any age. It is a contagious respiratory illness. Common symptoms are fever, congestion, cough, body aches, and headaches. It is caused by a virus which means the only relief is to get rest, plenty of fluids, and ride it out. Note: pushing through it is NOT the answer and can result in worse illnesses such as bronchitis or pneumonia.
Salt therapy is very simple to do but the results are profound. A person simply sits back and relaxes while reading, journaling, meditating or even sleeping in a room where pure, pharmaceutical grade salt is pumped into the air from a machine called a halogenerator.
Salt is made up primarily of sodium chloride and for salt therapy, we use pure, pharmaceutical grade sodium chloride that is ground up to about the size of the red blood cell and dispersed into the air. This salt has three main properties that make it so effective at keeping, or getting, us healthy:
- The salt is absorbent. The dry salt absorbs allergens, toxins, and other foreign substances from the lungs and the rest of the respiratory tract.
- Salt is anti-microbial. Think about how salt used to be used to preserve meat. Because the salt is absorbent, it pulls water out of the bacteria which, if it doesn’t outright kill it, it will at least prevent it from proliferating.
- Halotherapy is also anti-inflammatory which helps reduce the aches and pains associated with the flu.
In the United States, there is no optimal protocol suggestions for halotherapy. The guidelines that exist are based on the Eastern European Published Clinical Reports. Generally, it is recommended that you enjoy salt therapy 2-3 times in your first 7 to 10 days of treatment and then adjust to what works best for your individual body. For general health, it is recommended at least once per week.
