It goes without saying that we have all been affected by Covid-19.
Chances are, either ourselves, or someone we know, has either had the disease or died from it.
But there are lots of things that you can do to keep yourself safe aside from wearing your mask and washing your hands:
1. Eat a healthy diet
I know, we have all heard it, but do you REALLY know what it means?
Consume foods that your great-grandmother would have recognized and stop eating “food-like” products. Basically, stick to fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and a little animal protein.
It’s also recommended that you do not consume fruits and vegetables that have been treated with pesticides. So, go organic if you can. If you can’t, know that it is better to eat fruits and vegetables that have been treated than to avoid them altogether.
2. Stress reduction/ management
Another one that we hear all the time but life is SO stressful!
Many people perceive that their life is stressful and don’t know how to step away from the drama. Some even embrace it because it makes them feel alive.
Take a moment to recognize if something is going to be a problem in 5 minutes, 5 days, or 5 years. If the answer is “no,” then let it go.
Feeling stressed? Take a moment to focus on your breathing. When you make your exhale longer than your inhale, you reset your cortisol levels and feel calmer.
3. Sleep
So many people struggle with sleep and many of my clients find that they improve their sleep simply by practicing good sleep hygiene.
What is that?
Turn off ALL screens (t.v., computer, phone, e-readers) at least an hour before bed. Enjoy a soothing cup of chamomile, passion flower, or valerian tea. Soaking in a relaxing Epsom salt bath. Doing some light stretches or reading a fun book. In short, keeping things quiet and dark to prepare the body for sleep.
4. Exercise
Some people get a real buzz from intense exercise.
You don’t need to spend hours at a gym to exercise and, truth be told, I, as a health coach, don’t recommend that too often. (We are all different!)
I do recommend that you get some gentle movement in every day – go for a walk, ride a bike, do some gentle yoga or stretching. All those things can be beneficial for supporting our immune system without causing undue stress on the body.
5. Social interactions
Maintaining social connections/ interactions is more important than ever.
Not everyone is comfortable meeting up with people in situations that are recognized as safe. However, you can still connect with others through zoom, facetime, and other on-line programs.
Staying healthy is more important than ever. If you find that you are in the population that struggles with being overweight and is looking to reverse that, please ask about my program, The Healthy Way. This is a 12 week program designed to help people loose the weight for good and ditch exhaustion forever in a group setting while being recognized as an individual using Functional Medicine.
