Functional Medicine

When Conventional Medicine Isn’t Enough

Conventional medicine is essential in emergencies—like when my friend lost the tip of her finger in a leaf blower accident. In those situations, it’s exactly what you need. But if you’re dealing with a chronic health condition like IBS, arthritis, autoimmune disease, fatigue, or unexplained symptoms—and your doctor tells you, “It’s normal,” “It’s all in your head,” or “You’re just depressed,—it’s time to explore a different approach.

Common Symptoms That Shouldn’t Be Ignored

Many people struggle with symptoms that disrupt their daily lives, including:

  • Chronic pain in joints and muscles
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Trouble sleeping or insomnia
  • Acid reflux (GERD), bloating, constipation, or diarrhea
  • Anxiety, depression, mood swings, or heart palpitations
  • Post-nasal drip, chronic congestion, or sinus issues

A quick prescription might provide temporary relief, but it doesn’t always treat the root cause. That’s because most doctors don’t have the time to take a deep dive into your health—your stress levels, hydration, food sensitivities, and environmental exposures all play a role.

How a Functional Medicine Health Coach Can Help

A Functional Medicine Health Coach helps identify underlying imbalances contributing to your health concerns. Through personalized wellness strategies, nutrition guidance, lifestyle changes, and advanced lab testing, we can uncover what’s really going on in your body.

You don’t have to settle for feeling less than your best. Let’s work together to restore your energy, balance your body, and help you feel like yourself again.

My name is Missy Cohen and, after spending 30 years working in the hospital environment, I was tired of not actually helping people heal from their ailments. I would watch people’s labwork change as they became pre-diabetic and then “suddenly” diabetic, and I was aware that the doctors were not mentioning that there were signs of trouble coming down the road for these patients until they had full-blow diabetes and were in crisis. Diabetes is almost always a lifestyle disease that is preventable and even reversible through education and small changes. My personal wake-up call came when my own son would come home from school, drink two big glasses of milk, and then by supper be curled up in his bed with severe stomach cramps. He was severely constipated and the doctors could not figure out what was wrong with my then 8-year old. It was a health coach who determined that my son was lactose intolerant. Knowing this was one thing. Knowing what to do about it was a completely different story. It took a lot of education, experimenting in the kitchen, and trial and error to learn what worked well for my child and my family. Since that experience over 15 years ago, I have trained with IIN (Institute of Integrative Nutrition), received my certification in Functional Medicine from the School of Applied Functional Medicine, and am continuing my studies with The Academy of Functional Wellness. If you are tired of not feeling well, have been told that “there is nothing wrong with you,” are struggling to find solutions to diagnosed issues, or are just confused about all the information out there and can’t pull it all together, there are 3 ways that I can help you:

Why work with a Functional Medicine Health Coach?

Kim T

I had joined/tried multiple diets before and always ended back where I was before, only losing a few pounds here and there. I was looking for a more permanent and natural change. There’s no points to count and I didn’t feel like I had to follow a meal plan.

Crazy this week but otherwise really well. I’m really happy with the mindset work that I’ve been doing in the last few weeks. I’m finding that I’m not engaging in the negative self-talk anymore and feel like I’m on a more even keel emotionally. I’ve been pushing past my comfort zone in work, in my biking and climbing and when I have a set back or don’t do as well as I hoped, I’m not beating myself up over it any more. My stress level has gone way down, even the stressors themselves haven’t really changed.

In just a few weeks I’ve noticed less fatigue, less bloating, improvement in bowel movements. I feel healthier and happier. I have stopped my anxiety medication and am focused on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
