How Stress Affects Weight and What to Do About It

Did you know that the stress of everyday life can cause you to hold on to weight?

Take a break! Spending just 45 minutes in the salt room will help you relax and feel less stressed. The beautiful salt wall is made from Himalayan sea salt. Over 650 million years ago, this salt was a primal sea. The sea dehydrated and when the tectonic plates shifted and formed the current Himalayan Mountains, that sea was buried and hidden from the world.

Because the Himalayan salt is a dehydrated sea, like the ocean, the salt naturally emits negative ions into the air. These negative ions change our biochemistry, making us less anxious, depressed and sad. Also, relaxing in a salt room reduces the amount of cortisol that we release into our bodies.

Cortisol is our “fight or flight” hormone. This is the hormone that is released when we are in a state of stress whether we are upset with our spouse or boss, have gotten in a car accident or, in the olden days, suffering from a war or famine. When too much of this hormone is released into our bodies, especially day after day, our body thinks that it needs to hang on to the food that we have consumed. Our digestion slows, toxins get stored and our bodies do not run efficiently.

So, the next time you think taking a break is a waste of time, think again. Science has shown that we are actually MORE productive when we take time out of our day to do, well, nothing and you are allowing your body to relax into a different mode. A mode known as sympathetic nervous system or “rest and digest” mode.

Our bodies are not designed to be in the “fight or flight” mode chronically. Take time to “rest and digest.”
