A salt lamp is a block of Himalayan salt, exactly like the pink Himalayan salt that you grind up and put on your food, which has been mined from the Khewra Salt Mines in Pakistan. These blocks are crystals which have been hand cut and hollowed out in the center so that a light bulb can be placed inside them. Without the light bulb, you just have a chunk of salt. It is still beneficial but not as beneficial as an actual lamp. The bulb does two things. It emits light and heat.
The benefits of these lamps is three-fold.
These lamps act as a natural air purifier. They remove pollutants resulting in cleaner, healthier air. Our air contains water vapor and this water vapor traps air pollutants such as mold, bacteria and allergens. Because salt attracts water to it, think about how your salt shaker attracts water to it on a humid day, the water vapor is drawn to the salt lamp. The pollutants in the air remain trapped in the salt lamp but the heat from the bulb inside the lamp allows the salt to dry out which allows the water vapor to return to the air and allows the salt to attract more water vapor to it in a continuous cycle.
By removing these pollutants from the air, people with allergies, asthma, and other breathing conditions find being around salt lamps improves their breathing.
Salt lamps help neutralize electromagnetic radiation. Electromagnetic radiation is emitted from cell phones, computers, televisions, power lines and more. Even at low doses, this radiation has been shown to cause serious long-term effects including fatigue, increased stress, a decreased immune system, cancers and even to contribute to Alzheimer’s Disease. The Himalayan salt lamps release negative ions which is believed to cancel out the effects of the electromagnetic radiation. It is a great idea to keep one next to your desk and have it on while you are working.
Those same negative ions that help neutralize electromagnetic radiation have also been demonstrated to change the biochemistry of our bodies so that we feel less anxious and allow us to get improved sleep at night. Of course, sleep always helps decrease anxiety but, in addition, the color of the salt lamps provides color therapy which is also calming and aids in reducing anxiety.
The color of salt lamps ranges from a whitish pink to a pinkish-orange. Himalayan salt contains 84 minerals and the concentration of those minerals determines the color of the lamp but, ultimately, the hue is defined by a personal preference.
